On Sunday 4th March 2007, members and friends of Newbourne Methodist Church shared in a service to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Ghanaian Independence. For several months a Ghanaian Fellowship has been meeting in these premises, and so it was appropriate for there to be a significant service to mark this important Ghanaian anniversary. Within the service, members of the Ghanaian Fellowship, some of whom have also recently been received into Methodist Membership, shared about the history of their country, its wealth and resources, the reasons for many coming to Britain, and the nature of church life in Ghana. The Ghanaian National Anthem was sung and this was followed by songs of praise led by the Ghanaians, further enlivening this act of joyful worship and celebration. During the service the colours of the Ghanaian flag were explained; red for the blood of the nation’s freedom fighters, yellow for the mineral wealth of the country and green for its forests, with the black star representing the lodestar of emancipation. The flowers in church had been carefully chosen and arranged using the Ghanaian colours of red, yellow and green.

After the service there was a moving vote of thanks from the Ghanaian Fellowship to the Minister (Rev. Robert Creamer) and the members of Newbourne Methodist Church for making this celebration possible. Then there was plenty of food to share, as young and old, black and white shared together in an afternoon of relaxed fellowship.
